Pokken Tournament Adds Blastoise as New Fighter

Pokken Tournament Adds Blastoise as New Fighter

Bandai Namco Studio’s Pokemon fighting game Pokken Tournament DX has released its second DLC Pack. The expansion content officially introduces Blastoise as the game’s newest fighter.

Blastoise, which has been one of the Pokemon series’ most iconic evolved starter Pokemon since its appearance in the very first games, joins the roster of Pokken Tournament DX as the title’s 23rd fighter. As would be expected given its sturdy frame and the cannons protruding from its shell, Blastoise is described by Nintendo as a “heavy fighter” and appears to have its emphasis placed on ranged attacks, at both close- and long-range.

Not the first Water-type starter Pokemon to appear in Pokken Tournament, Blastoise distinguishes itself from other fighters with its notable defensive armor. In addition, the new 23rd fighter is able to enter a “Shell Fortress Stance,” in which it retreats into its shell and launches itself into its opponent, using that heavy armor as a weapon. The water Pokemon’s Burst Attack is a move called “Destructive Cannon,” an extremely powerful attack which it uses upon transforming into Mega Blastoise, during the Pokemon’s Synergy Mode.

Pokken Tournament DX’s second DLC Pack also adds the Legendary Pokemon Celebi and Mew to the game as assist characters. Mew comes equipped with an ability called “Miraculous Power,” which randomly increases the fighter’s attack or causes those attacks to result in critical hits. Meanwhile, Celebi’s “Time Travel” attack forces the fight into a Phase Shift.

Celebi and Mew Added by Pokken Tournament as Support Characters

Pokken Tournament DX released in September of last year as a Nintendo Switch port of the original Wii U title Pokken Tournament. This newly-released pack is in fact the second half of the game’s Battle Pack DLC, the first DLC for Pokken Tournament DX. The Battle Pack is available for $14.99 and includes both the new Blastoise pack and the previous pack, which released on January 31st. That first pack added the Pokemon Aegislash as the game’s 22nd fighter, along with Mimikyu and Mega Rayquaza as assist characters.

The Switch port of Pokken Tournament received positive reviews on launch that often rated the title better than its original Wii U release, partially due to the addition of half a dozen new characters. While the game has enjoyed success as an arcade game in Japan, its Switch release seems to have given it a new lease of life, although Nintendo has yet to announce any more upcoming DLC.

Pokken Tournament DX is available on Nintendo Switch.
