Call of Duty Movie May Have Found Its Director

The World of Warcraft movie may have been a critical flop and struggled at the domestic box office, but Activision-Blizzard still has ambitious plans for the film industry. In fact, it plans on launching an entire cinematic universe based on the Call of Duty franchise, and now the first film in the series may have found its director.

Reports indicate that the director of the upcoming Sicario 2: Soldado, Stefano Sollima, is in talks to direct the first Call of Duty movie. While relatively unknown in the United States, the 51 year old director has helmed some critically-acclaimed films internationally, including the 2015 Italian film Suburra.

Unfortunately, we know very little about the Call of Duty movie project at this time beyond the fact that it will attempt to create a shared cinematic universe to compete with the likes of Marvel and DC, and that the script is being written by Kieran Fitzgerald. Previous reports indicated that Activision-Blizzard Studios has already collected numerous Call of Duty scripts, and that the films will take inspiration from various Call of Duty games.

Considering this, the first Call of Duty film could be just about anything. It’s possible that the film will be set in World War 2, like the first few Call of Duty games, or perhaps it will attempt to adapt the Modern Warfare trilogy to the big screen. Alternatively, the first Call of Duty could be based on more recent entries in the series, like Black Ops 3 or Infinite Warfare.

A film based on Infinite Warfare seems highly unlikely, considering the severe fan backlash that game suffered. Having said that, Infinite Warfare did feature Game of Thrones star Kit Harington as the villain, and so maybe Activision-Blizzard will call on him and other celebrities that have appeared in Call of Duty titles to star in the films.

As it stands, we still know next to nothing about the Call of Duty film, so hopefully more information comes to light once Activision-Blizzard Studios hires Sollima or another director.

Call of Duty is in development at Activision-Blizzard Studios.
