NeatherRealm Studios promised a big surprise when it revealed the final character for Fighter Pack 3 of Injustice 2. Without a leak or rumor to spoil the surprise, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wowed and shocked the crowd at the Injustice 2 World Championships back in November. Thanks to the most recent gameplay trailer, players now have a better sense of how these turtles play and look in-game. While NeatherRealm nailed the look and feel of the turtles, the studio also squeezed in a number of callbacks and references as well.
Initially caught by Grant Smith on Twitter, the developers at NetherRealm Studios places a number blink and you’ll miss it references throughout the debut Injustice 2 Turtles trailer. The biggest one can be seen very early on when Mikey picks up his skateboard which features a few stickers. The first is a picture of an apple with the word big on it, with the word 3AM listed right below it. Fans of Konami’s popular arcade gameTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time may remember Big Apple: 3 AM being the first level’s name.

In addition to Michaelangelo’s skateboard, the trailer also features a number of other big-name references from the franchise including the Turtles’ longstanding enemy Bebop. Towards the end as Raphael smashes the pizza onto the screen is another callback to the old animated series, which featured Raphael doing a similar thing during the cartoon intro. NetherRealm also pays homage to its other major fighting franchise, Mortal Kombat, with the name on the pizza box being Bone ‘N Crust and the warning on the side mentioning the word Toasty, which Dan Forden made famous in Mortal Kombat II.
Last night on its Watchtower stream, NetherRealm Studios also answered one of the biggest fan questions remaining regarding how the Turtles actually play considering that there are four of them. The default character is Leonardo, though fans can select one of the other members of the team by changing the equipped weapon from the character loadout menu. While character items typically need to be unlocked through randomized mother boxes, the Turtles also break this mold by giving players access to Sais, Swords, Nunchucks, and a Staff right off the bat. It’ll be up to the player to change the loadout prior to loading a match in order to use a different turtle.
Injustice 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
