Is a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Movie On the Cards?

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has had monumental success already. The battle royale game has over 30 million players across PC and Xbox One and players can’t get enough of its tense, multiplayer gameplay. Following this success, the developer behind the game has major plans for its future.

In a new interview, Chang Han Kim, the CEO of PUBG Corporation revealed his interest in making the game a multimedia heavyweight. ” I’d like PUBG to become a universal media franchise based on the game,” said Kim, who explained that these plans include “Esports, movies, drama, cartoons, animation, and more.”

The executive also revealed that the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds team has already received calls from a “number” of developers from Hollywood and Netflix. “Our dream is to build a new game-based culture through various ways like this, and have the lead of that culture,” detailed Kim.

The success of the game is partly because it is so thrilling to watch. Streamers and YouTubers have captivated their audiences by showing off impressive plays from landing sniper shots from miles away to ambushing enemies when they least expect it. YouTubers especially have been able to get viewers by weaving their own storylines with people tuning in to see how the latest way a daring squad won a chicken dinner. The camaraderie of players and their teammates has also won people over.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds would translate well to the big-screen. The game is so much fun to watch because everything that players are watching is organic. It’s unrehearsed, it’s unexpected and it’s totally captivating as a result. But would a scripted movie with trained actors have the same appeal? Without knowing PUBG Corp.’s vision for the movie it’s difficult to say.

If the team does decide to pursue a Hollywood movie deal then it could still be a long way off. The developer has a lot of plans for its more immediate future, including a possible PUBG release on PS4.

Moreover, the developer is working towards the game’s full release on Xbox One and bringing the desert map to the console. It will also want to keep addressing the game’s cheater problem and introducing other quality of life features (such as the killcam and replay system) may be on the cards too.

These will surely be the priority before it sets about creating blockbuster movies and streaming spin-offs. Fans who love playing and watching the game should stay tuned for more developments.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now on PC and on Xbox One through its Game Preview program.
